Peewee Girls Win YCW Consolation
The Blyth-Brussels Peewee girls traveled to Goderich over the first weekend of March break for the 60th Annual Lions Young Canada Peewee Tournament.

The family and friends of the team were treated to 5 great games of hockey.

Game 1 - Seaforth.  The girls got off to a great start in this game on goals by Mackenzie Nesbitt and Jordyn Sholdice.  That score would hold until the third period when Seaforth got on the board.  The team played a considerable amount of that third period in their own end of the ice, but managed to hang on for the win.  Final score 2-1.

Game 2 - Chatsworth.  The team built a 3-0 lead in the first.  The teams traded goals for the rest of the game.  Final score in the victory was 6-3.  Goal scorers were Sholdice and Ashley Higgins with singles, and Lexi Smith and Taylor Higgins scoring two each.

Game 3 - Mount Forest.  The team knew this was a very strong opponent with excellent defensive play.  They won over half their games all season by shutting out the opposition, and had yet to surrender a goal in the tournament.  That would change early in this game.  Sholdice scored 28 seconds into the game, and added another minutes later, on a powerful shot into the top of the net.  Mount Forest scored in the final seconds of the first and tied the game midway through the second period.  With 13 seconds remaining in the second, Sholdice completed the natural hat trick, and proud father Doug launched his hat onto the ice surface.  The girls held the lead until late in the third when Mount Forest scored on the power play with 4 minutes to go.  Two minutes later, a deflected shot resulted in Mount Forest's first lead of the game.  Final score was a loss by a 4-3 margin.  Great overall effort.

Game 4 - Semi-final versus Markdale.  This proved to be a very tight checking game.  Lexi Smith got the team on the board in the first period.  That lead stood into the intermission after two periods.  Markdale evened the score in the first minute of the third.  Neither team could get the second goal in the third period.  A five minute overtime played four skaters aside did not provide a winner either.  Lindsay Shiell provided great goaltending in this game to get the team through the third period and overtime.  The game would be settled by a shootout.  It lasted one shooter each with Markdale scoring to advance to the final.

Game 5 - Consolation versus the host Goderich Sailorettes.  For the fifth straight time, the girls would open the scoring in the first period.  Sholdice got the tally.  Jessica Hastie replied for Goderich late in the first, and to open the second period, to grab the 2-1 lead.  However, 39 seconds later, Smith scored on a nifty backhand over the sprawling Goderich goalie.  Smith would add another with four minutes to go in the second.  The third period provided tremendous action at both ends of the ice.  Blyth-Brussels was unable to get the insurance marker and Goderich was unable to get the equalizer despite numerous chances for both to happen.  Consolation winners by a score of 3-2.

The tournament was a great effort all around.  The team got better with each game and was in a position to win every game they played.  Great work.
