BANTAMS SEMI-FINALISTS AT INTERNATIONAL SILVER STICK
The Bantams participated in the International Silver Stick Tournament this past weekend in Forest, Ontario.

The team had a strong showing at International Silver Stick, where all the teams were tough, fast and competitive.  All winning their local regional Silver Stick tournaments to advance here, where we would all battle for the gold.

The road to the semi-final game started with a loss to the Mariposa team on Friday.  The morning Saturday game against South West would now be a do or die situation. Losing was not an option if the team wanted to stay alive in the tournament.  The Blyth Brussels team would strike early and score on the first shift at 29 seconds,  the teams then battled for 39 minutes of scoreless hockey.  It was tense for the fans, but a well earned victory in the end for Blyth Brussels, and a tutorial on how to play defence was the key their success. The team suffered the loss of Carson Heise who took a tough hit into the boards and broke his arm in the first period of the game.

On Saturday afternoon, the team faced off against West Grey, and the team won 3 to 1 to seal the deal to advance to the semi-final game.  Great passing and staying out of the penalty box had been keys to the team’s success this game.

The semi final game of Silver Stick was an early morning 8:00am puck drop against Flesherton. At the West Grey tournament championship game earlier this season, the Blyth Brussels team had fallen short in overtime against this team. Going into the game, the boys from Blyth Brussels knew they could go toe to toe with this team and advance. The Blyth Brussels Bantams fell behind to a 3 to 0 deficit after the first period, but found their legs in the second and scored three to tie the game.  The third period was scoreless, meaning the teams would play a sudden victory overtime period to determine who would advance to the championship game.

Back and forth the teams would battle for over 3 minutes of tense hockey until a scramble would end in a goal for Flesherton.  Congratulations to Mason Weber who was honoured by the tournament committee and named an All Star of the tournament.  Quite an honour because traditionally the All Stars are picked from the teams that play in the final game.

This team has proven this year that they know how to win, they are highly competitive, leave it all on the ice every game and they can never be counted out, even if they fall behind.

The team represented well and MUST thank the Belgrave Kinsmen and the Brussels Optimists who stepped up to help support and pay for the team's entry fee into the International Silver Stick tournament.  An honour to represent our community, and feeling honoured to be supported by the community!
