Atom Girls Play For WOAA Championship
Twelve teams entered the WOAA Atom girls playoff tournament with hopes of capturing the Championship.  Sunday, March 16th Blyth will be one of the two teams to vie for the title.

The tournament opened Friday night with a win against Howick 3-2.  The girls had not played in a few weeks and the rust showed.  After a slow start they came from behind in the final two periods including the game winner with 48 seconds to go.  All three goals were scored by Ashley Higgins.

The next game was against Chatsworth on Saturday afternoon.  The girls hit their stride and won 7-0 against a very young Chatsworth team.  Scoring for Blyth were Higgins with another hat trick, 2 for Teresa Atkinson and singles for Amy Boyce and Sydney Michie.  It was Michie's first of the season - way to go!!  Assists went to Autumn Wightman (2), Shelby Higgins, Brooke Middegaal, and Amy Boyce (2).

Next up was a semi-final game against Tiverton.  This would be a battle that kept the fans on the edge of their seats.  Tiverton opened the scoring 3 minutes into the game.  Higgins took over late in the first and scored twice to take the lead.  With 26 seconds left in the period Tiverton scored to even  it at 2.  The second period was back and forth action and then Higgins completed her third hat trick in as many games late in the period.  Again, Tiverton would not quit and grabbed the equalizing goal a minute later.

The third period was very tense with several chances by both teams.  At the halfway mark, Higgins would strike again, assisted by Sydney Wightman and Sydney Michie.  In the final minutes, Tiverton buzzed the net and Lindsay Shiell held strong in goal.  The defense core of Autumn Wightman, Leanne Plunkett and Mackenzie Nesbitt played a phenomenal game to hold back the Tiverton attack.  Shelby Higgins was injured and unable to play her fearless game on defense.
Final score 4-3 for Blyth and on to the final game.  Way to Go !!!

Game time is 2:00 pm Sunday in Ayton.
